For too long, Republican spending bills have missed key opportunities to implement President Trump’s agenda on policy, but also on spending. Many of the House and Senate spending bills have spent at levels well above what the president requested, and deliberately funded priorities that the president sought to diminish in his budget.
To date, the House has passed six of twelve spending bills, and the Senate has passed nine. None of them have been sent to the White House for the president’s signature. Notably, the first spending bill that both chambers passed was the one that funded themselves.
Now, Congress wants to punt two key spending bills – funding for the troops, and funding for the Department of Homeland Security – to after the election. We believe this would be a mistake.
Congress should immediately address these issues. Specifically, when it comes to the Department of Homeland Security spending bill, Republican majorities should seize the opportunity to enact key immigration reforms: funding for President Trump’s border wall, strong border security mechanisms, an end to funding for sanctuary cities, and an end to President Obama’s illegal executive amnesty.
These reforms are President Trump’s top priorities and represent key promises that Republicans have been making for decades. Republican majorities would be making a mistake to introduce bills that avoid addressing these questions. They would also be avoiding critical accountability on this issue by choosing only to handle it after the election.
We urge congressional Republicans to use this spending process to focus on their long-held priorities: lower spending, fiscal accountability, and the many conservative policy riders that have been promised to voters for years.
