Conservatives stand with the Trump Administration in suspending US taxpayer financial support for the World Health Organization as officials review the future of federal funding of the WHO.
The Taiwanese government has stated it provided evidence of human-to-human transmission to the WHO in December. Even WHO’s own doctors have admitted they suspected as much at the same time. But on January 14, the WHO stated there was “no clear evidence of human-to-human transmission” with COVID19.
Taking Chinese lies at face value, the WHO publicly praised Chinese government leaders on January 28 for the “actions China has implemented in response to the outbreak, its speed in identifying the virus and openness to sharing information with WHO and other countries.” That false statement only reinforced the lies and deception of the Chinese government about the coronavirus and cost untold lives throughout the world as a result.
It is increasingly apparent that the WHO failed in its primary mission to protect the world from the COVID19 outbreak.
The head of the WHO, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, publicly criticized the travel bans put in place by a number of countries seeking to slow the spread of COVID19 in January, while continuing to praise China for its “transparency” in fighting the virus. The organization did not declare COVID19 to be a pandemic until March 11.
The judgment of Dr. Tedros has long been suspect. In 2017, he appointed the Zimbabwean dictator Robert Mugabe as a “goodwill ambassador” to the WHO. Tedros has also been accused of covering up cholera outbreaks in two countries.
Corruption at the WHO has been endemic for years. The organization has been widely criticized for its handling of the Ebola crisis, which a specialist review panel characterized as “late, feeble, and uncoordinated.” Internal documents leaked in 2017 revealed that the WHO spent more on luxury travel than it did on efforts to combat malaria, tuberculosis, and AIDS combined.
As part of its response to COVID19, the WHO has spent time advocating that abortion drugs remain “essential” during this global pandemic – in keeping with the organization’s long track record of pro-abortion advocacy. The WHO’s western hemisphere subsidiary, the Pan American Health Organization repeatedly carries water for Cuba’s military dictatorship.
Democrats have already launched an investigation into the administration’s review of the funds, stating President Trump’s decision to halt WHO funding “in the midst of a global pandemic is counterproductive and puts lives at risk.”
To the contrary, this is precisely the time to review whether or not U.S. taxpayer dollars should instead be sent to other global health organizations that actually perform their core missions. How many more lives will be put at risk by WHO’s abject incompetence?
The WHO is a corrupt, politically manipulated organization that serves the interests of Communist countries over the mission of global public health. We support the administration’s efforts to review, and potentially to revoke, the U.S. contribution.
