We write to lend our support for the proposed re-write of Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for light-duty vehicles, model years 2021 to 2025.
CAFE standards were established in 1975 during a time of grave national concern over fuel scarcity and America’s reliance on imported energy. Both our national dialogue, as well as our access to fuel resources, has changed significantly, and a review of the purpose and effectiveness of existing CAFE standards is long overdue.
Moreover, the existing standards, set in 2012, not only anticipated a five-year review, but their questionable effectiveness has demonstrated that one is deserved. The 2012 standards are proving too ambitious, costly, and simply not viable for automakers from a practical or safety standpoint. Indeed, the National Auto Dealers Association has found that existing mandates increase the cost of vehicles by an average of $3,000. The National Academy of Sciences, along with the Harvard School of Public Health and the Brookings Institution, have all concluded that CAFE standards are directly responsible for additional fatalities on the road.
We support the administration’s leadership on re-assessing the effectiveness and safety of the thousands of government regulations. On CAFE standards in particular, we lend our support a proposed re-write that balances environmental protection with safety, efficiency, and liberty.
