Conservatives urge swift passage of the $9.4 billion in federal spending rescissions that the White House has submitted to the Congress. If passed, these rescissions will immediately terminate specific line items of wasteful government spending, much of it identified by the Department of Government Efficiency, better known as DOGE.
Included in the $9 billion package are rescissions in federal spending for NPR, PBS, and the U.S. Agency for International Development, among other areas. Under the rescissions process, President Trump would be able to terminate congressionally appropriated funding to these agencies and outlets immediately.
Once the package is sent to Capitol Hill, Congress has 45 days to consider it. It is vital that Congress act. For decades, conservatives and Republicans have been elected for their stated commitment to cut wasteful government spending. The Trump administration is now providing them a critical opportunity to do so.
More importantly, however, should Congress fail to pass these rescissions, the administration will have a much harder time reducing or eliminating that spending later. In other words, this is a one-time opportunity for congressional Republicans to put their vote where their rhetoric has been for years – ending the wasteful spending in government.
The work of DOGE has been transformative in exposing the bureaucratic rot and waste in the federal government. Congress can make DOGE’s work permanent. The White House has done its job fulfilling the mandate of making government work more efficiently – Congress must now do its part and pass this rescissions package without delay.
