The conservative movement stands with Senator Rand Paul in his support of re-hiring firefighters terminated for not receiving the COVID-19 vaccination. The Senate will soon have an opportunity to consider this amendment and we urge all senators to support this and other Republican amendments.
The Senate is currently considering S.870, which reauthorizes grant funding for fire departments. The authorization expires in 18 months. The Congressional Budget Office estimates it will cost $15.8 billion over ten years, without an offset.
Unfortunately, firefighters whose stations receive federal support under this program were, over the last few years, told to submit to the COVID-19 vaccine mandates or they would lose their livelihood. In Los Angeles alone, over 100 firefighters were removed from duty without pay for choosing not to get the vaccine.
It is unconscionable that we should put American citizens in this position. It not only goes against the vital free conscience rights of every American, it impacts critical sectors of our economy.
The Senate should begin to undo the damage wrought by heavy-handed and irrational COVID-19 mandates. Senator Paul’s amendment is a first step in that direction. The Senate should take up this amendment and others in a robust amendment process. We ask all senators to support it, and we urge the Senate not to pass S.870 unless it includes Senator Paul’s amendment.
