Conservatives applaud the efforts of red state governors to effectively balance public health with jobs, production, and economic growth.
States across the country have responded in different ways to the COVID-19 pandemic. Governor Ron DeSantis in Florida, Governor Kristi Noem in South Dakota, Governor Greg Abbott in Texas, Governor Mike Dunleavy in Alaska, Governors Gary Herbert and Spencer Cox in Utah, Governor Kim Reynolds in Iowa, and Governor Pete Ricketts in Nebraska deserve tremendous credit for having the cool-headed clarity and data-driven approaches to keep their populations safe while managing a state-wide economy. Many of these same states are now leading the country in vaccinations, as well.
We commend the governors who have effectively managed this crisis in ways that prioritize both health and reasonable economic measures.
To the contrary, states like California and New York – which initiated full shutdowns of their economies – did not effectively contain the virus better than other states, and now face serious financial crises as their state residents suffer from lack of services and personal impoverishment.
Wisdom in crisis should be rewarded, not punished. States who managed well should not have to pay for bailouts to states whose executives handled this crisis poorly. And neither should the U.S. taxpayer.
We oppose so-called “blue state bailouts” which will reward mismanagement, allow failed policies to continue, and redistribute wealth from successful to failing states.
