January 4, 2018
As Republican congressional leadership and the President prepare their legislative agenda for 2018, the Conservative Action Project Steering Committee calls on them to prioritize several key issues.
• Finish repealing Obamacare. Now that the individual mandate is gone, Congress must do what they promised for the last eight years and repeal the law in its entirety, including its associated regulations. This must be the focus of the 2019 budget reconciliation instructions. Under no circumstances should health insurance companies be given billion dollar bailouts.
• Do not provide amnesty to illegal immigrants. Congress should not provide amnesty to recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Moreover, any proposal dealing with immigration reform should be given transparent debate and deliberation in Congress — not stuffed into a thousand-page omnibus spending bill.
• Confirm President Trump’s nominees. Over 500 of the President’s nominees are still awaiting confirmation by the Senate. Both Presidents Bush and Obama had substantially more confirmations at the same time in their respective terms. The Senate must begin working full weeks — rather than the 2.5-day weekly work schedule they keep now — to provide timely confirmation to the President.
• Support fiscally responsible policies. Republicans have promised responsible actions toward the debt and deficit for decades, and they should not walk away from that now. The spending policies outlined in President Trump’s budget begin to whittle away at years of fiscal neglect. Republican leadership should make action on those policies a consistent focus of their agenda in 2018.
These priorities are in line with those outlined by President Trump in his contract with the American voter. We urge the congressional leadership and the President to recall the promises they made to voters, and to make 2018 the year they focus on keeping them.
