Conservatives call on congressional Republicans to stand united in opposition to both the forthcoming infrastructure bill and the Democrat-led reconciliation legislation.
It is now clear that the fate of these two bills is inextricably linked. While the $1.2 trillion infrastructure legislation may have been conceived as a separate effort, it has now become a critical component of passing the hotly partisan, multi-trillion dollar reconciliation bill which seeks to fundamentally transform the relationship between the individual and the state with its vast expansion of federal power.
The infrastructure legislation is itself no gem of conservative policy. It dumps more money into a failing Amtrak system without reforming it, sends a disproportionate amount of money to major city transit systems, directs billions of federal subsidies into electric vehicles and low-emission buses and ferries, and even more into suspect climate change policies.
But critically, a vote for this infrastructure bill is a vote for the Democrats’ vast social policies – so-called “human infrastructure” – which they plan to implement along party lines using reconciliation legislation.
This multi-trillion dollar bill represents the most significant expansion of state power since the New Deal, and would reach federal tentacles into every area of American life. From subsidizing universal pre-K and daycare (neglecting those families who prefer to raise their children in the home), to massive public housing subsidies, to further entrenching the disaster that is Obamacare, to pouring half-a-trillion dollars into climate change, to forcing Medicaid expansion onto red states, to flooding the country with cheap foreign labor, to making it easier for illegal immigrants to flout our immigration laws, this legislation is a blatant attempt to remake the American way of life.
Congressional Republicans should not abet the passage of this reconciliation bill in any way. And that means opposing the reconciliation effort, as well as the infrastructure legislation, which Democrats have made central to their strategy of passing their reconciliation bill.
We urge unity from Republicans in the House and Senate in opposing both pieces of legislation, and this attempt by Democrats to impose a sweeping cradle-to-grave expansion of federal power on free Americans.
