The coronavirus pandemic is a legitimate public health emergency that requires a whole-of-government response.
The Trump administration acted swiftly to remove regulatory barriers and used executive power where appropriate to facilitate vaccine development, the production of necessary medical supplies, and control the flow of people into the country.
Millions of Americans have mobilized to confront the unprecedented spread of this highly contagious virus. But, one day soon, we need to return to school, work, and normal daily life.
Our nation’s public health experts have made it clear that we should have more complete data soon and we welcome that. It will be an important and valuable consideration to our state and national leaders, particularly those in California, Illinois, and New York.
Once America’s leaders have this fuller picture, they can make an informed decision regarding the timing of restarting the country’s economic engine. The risk to the most vulnerable balanced with the necessity of paying bills must be part of the equation.
Conservative leaders urge the administration to be wise and prudent in their decision-making process. The health and safety of our fellow citizens must be given utmost consideration. But so, too, is the vitality of the world’s most innovative and productive economy. A measured response that attempts to prioritize both will be necessary in the coming weeks.
